Having grown up in Leicester Ashley originally moved to Newcastle for his undergraduate training. Following this, he moved to the North West to complete his foundation and core surgical training. Although this move was good in terms of widening his horizons, he was always keen to move back to the North East.
Having been to uni here I already knew the city is fantastic, the people are extremely friendly and the hospitals are great, supportive places to train.
I am currently taking some time out of the programme for research, something which is very much encouraged in the orthopaedic programme here. This is a fantastic opportunity for me personally and professionally. I am certain I would not have found such a great opportunity elsewhere.
Everything is really close by whether it be the coast, countryside, live sports, great nightlife and the people and fellow trainees are very welcoming.
Just do it, you won’t regret it.
Get a comfortable car, there can be a bit of driving and there are loads of places to visit when not at work!
