Urology

About the urology programme

The urology training programme involves rotational posts in Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Carlisle. The posts provide comprehensive training in general urology as well as an opportunity to gain exposure to a variety of sub-specialist areas including endourology, reconstruction and minimally invasive surgery. We also include a three-month post in paediatric urology.

The region scores highly in terms of trainee satisfaction and we have a high success rate in passing the FRCS Urol examination. This success is driven by the high levels of commitment to training by consultants across the region, supported by a monthly region wide teaching programme. Simulated surgical training is embedded within our programme with regular sessions taking place within the state-of-the-art Newcastle Surgical Training Centre based at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne.

What our trainees say:

Mohamed Breish

“The training in the North East is recognised as some of the best in the country. The three units boast consultants working as leads in their field, and again all with an enthusiasm to teach and train.”

Anthony Emmanuel

“Urology as a specialty offers so much day-to-day variation in your practice. A normal week at work for a trainee can include full theatre days, full clinic days and a mix between. You get the chance to work with experienced consultants and nurse practitioners, all enthusiastic to teach.”
