Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the study, treatment, diagnosis and prevention of cancer.
The specialty is predominantly outpatient based and medical oncologists are core members of multidisciplinary cancer treatment teams. Trainees are expected to advise patients on all aspects of their treatment including surgery and radiotherapy as well as have the skills to administer systemic therapies.
The goal for trainees will be to provide the best possible outcomes for cancer patients, whether that’s a cure or palliative care. Training is across all tumour types, however, consultants sub-specialise.
An integral part of Medical Oncology is active involvement in clinical trials research.
The Medical Oncology programme is a four-year rotation. It is based at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It comprises six-monthly rotations through tumour-specific sites, with at least one six-month rotation being spent in James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
In the past 18 months, four trainees have obtained their Certificate of Completion Training (CCT) and all have gone on to obtain substantive consultant posts.

“The North East Clinical Oncology programme enables me to become an expert in delivering a wide range of radiotherapy techniques and systemic anti-cancer therapies across various tumour sites at one of the UK’s top cancer centres. My top choice program to pursue Clinical Oncology was the North East… it houses state-of-the-art facilities based primarily in Newcastle upon Tyne and Middlesbrough. Both centres offer stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy and Newcastle offers stereotactic brain radiotherapy.
“It has been an extraordinary journey – I wake up every morning with a grateful heart. Working in the North East with such a magnanimous, supportive, and exceptional team is unparalleled. Most importantly, there is a strong camaraderie with Medical Oncology colleagues and robust support during on-calls. Newcastle is one of the friendliest and safest cities; an unrivalled place to live for families. You have got fantastic schools, travel links, leisure amenities, beaches, cultural attractions, retail parks, plus Newcastle International Airport is on your doorstep to enable you to travel anywhere in the world!”
