Cardiology is an exciting and expanding specialty with highly effective evidence-based symptomatic and prognostic treatments. As a career, it appeals to doctors who thrive on a combination of diagnostic challenge and practical procedures but there are also highly rewarding, less invasive career paths.
We have one of the largest Cardiology training programmes offering all aspects of Cardiology training from high volume primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to valve intervention, cardiac MRI to 3D echocardiography, community Heart Failure clinics to adult and paediatric cardiac transplantation or mechanical circulatory support, and complex device implantation to both non-invasive and invasive Ventricular tachycardia (VT) ablation.
The first two years of Core Cardiology Training are generally spent in one of our ten district hospitals while the sub-specialty training years are generally split between the two major cardiothoracic surgical centres in the region, the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
All district hospital trusts have access to routine training via catheter laboratories and echocardiography departments and several can offer training in advanced cardiovascular imaging, complex devices implantation and/or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
There is an excellent face-to-face induction programme including a day of simulation in echocardiography, temporary pacing and pacemaker programming and vascular access/ diagnostic angiography using state-of-the-art computer-controlled equipment and one-to-one supervision.
We fully support less than full-time training (LTFT) and currently have a number of trainees working LTFT.

Here in the North East and North Cumbria, we have one of the UK’s largest cardiology training programmes. For Registrar Paul Galaway, the best thing about cardiology is the positive impact it has on his patients.
“Specialising in Cardiology enables me to provide people with so many excellent options. I deliver a wide variety of treatments, and see first-hand the results they deliver.”
“I love my job as it’s a perfect blend of a traditional physician’s knowledge and surgeon’s skill. There are a large number of hospitals in the region and you get the chance to work in most of them. This allows you to pick the best aspects of practice from each and forge your own way of working. It gives you the chance to spend time in different places and experience what they have to offer outside of work.”
