The Northern Deanery is one of the best regions in the country to train in ear nose and throat (ENT). We have a strong reputation with respect to clinical and surgical training and we score very highly on the General Medical Council (GMC) surveys. All the hospitals complement each other in order to fulfil all the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) requirements of the ENT curriculum.
The regional teaching program is consultant-led and occurs on a monthly basis. We run mock exams in preparation for the final FRCS-ORL HNS exam every year with the majority of our trainees passing the final ENT exam first time. In addition to consultant-led monthly full-day teaching, an additional two-three full days are also offered every year within the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre. Surgical skills are taught on a rotating basis concentrating on Head & Neck, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) and Rhinoplasty to name but a few.
The North East has a broad range of research activity available to trainees. We have a large and vibrant group of academic trainees and clinical units in the North East collaborate very well together in research projects and the Local Clinical Research Networks (LCRN) group is busy and successful. Clinical trainees have ample opportunity to involve themselves in clinical audit and service improvement.
Research forms a part of the routine training programme and the Munro Black research prize is awarded at both junior and senior level each year. This event allows trainees to practice presentations in front of a friendly audience and the winners get a welcome addition to their CV.

The programme is so balanced. My peers can specialise in ear, nose, or throat; be a head and neck specialist or a generalist. Depending on what you choose, your programme will be tailored to you.
Even as a ‘junior doctor’ they have let me do robotics which is really cool and really rewarding and definitely keeps me engaged. Being an academic trainee, the AI and robotics side of surgery is what I love and what I intend to do my PhD on. I get time for research which involves looking at AI and imagery and scans to predict patient outcomes, so I work closely with the likes of radiology.
My wife and I do a lot of touring around as we are quite outdoorsy. With Scotland and the Lake District so close we are spoilt for choice. We live in a semi rural area of Ponteland with lovely countryside but I am only 15 mins from the hospital which is great for non resident on call shifts. We know for a fact we wouldn’t be able to get the house we have down south. My uni friends who are working down South are commuting at least two hours a day and not living in particularly nice areas. We feel very lucky.
