The Northern Deanery is one of the best regions in the country to train in ENT. We have a strong reputation with respect to clinical and surgical training and we score very highly on the GMC surveys. All the hospitals complement each other in order to fulfil all the CCT requirements of the ENT curriculum.
The regional teaching program is consultant led and occurs on a monthly basis. We run mock exams in preparation for the final FRCS-ORL HNS exam every year with the majority of our trainees passing the final ENT exam first time. In addition to Consultant lead monthly full-day teaching, 2-3 full days are also offered every year within the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre. Surgical skills are taught on a rotating basis concentrating on Head & Neck, FESS and Rhinoplasty to name but a few.
The North East has a broad range of research activity available to trainees. We have a large and vibrant group of academic trainees and clinical units in the North East collaborate very well together in research projects and the LCRN group is busy and successful. Clinical trainees have ample opportunity to involve themselves in clinical audit and service improvement.
Research forms a part of the routine training programme and the Munro Black research prize is awarded at both junior and senior level each year. This event allows trainees to practice presentations in front of a friendly audience and the winners get a welcome addition to their CV.

“Surgical training in the North East is excellent. We are well supported from our TPD and supervisors, most who have trained in the region and gone on to be appointed consultant posts.”
