Dermatology is an excellent career option as one of the most varied medical specialties encompassing patients of all ages with inflammatory, inherited, environmental, occupational or malignant skin disorders.
Currently, skin disease is one of the most common reasons for patients to consult a doctor and given the observed increases in skin cancer and inflammatory conditions like eczema, Dermatology is an area of practice that will continue to expand in the future.
Specialist Dermatology involves predominantly outpatient work for diagnosis, investigation and treatment supported by appropriately staffed in-patient facilities for severe inflammatory disorders.
The programme provides comprehensive dermatology training in all sub-specialties with close links with Newcastle University’s Department of Dermatology, which has a strong and active research programme. Research is a vital aspect of medicine and Dermatology offers ample opportunities for both clinical and laboratory-based research.
A significant number of trainees undertake higher degrees (MDs and PhDs) via Out of Programme research during their training years. A number of them have gone on to clinical academic posts and continue high quality academic research in Inflammatory Dermatoses, Skin Cancer, Immunology and Genetics.
There are two rotations located at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the University Hospital of North Durham or the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough for between 6-12 months each, within the four-year programme.
After the first 18 months of clinical training, the rotation offers a unique (and optional) opportunity to rotate to the Academic Department of Dermatology at Newcastle University for one year to pursue research, or, within that year to develop an area of clinical expertise depending on your requirements.

“Training in the North East combines comprehensive clinical training with opportunities to get involved in clinical and laboratory research with an excellent range of mentors. The culture of the training programme is focussed on trainee development and I have always felt very well supported during my training. The training programme is tailored to allow broad general and subspecialty exposure with ample opportunity and encouragement to pursue specific areas of clinical interest and research.”
