Opportunities to work overseas

We are passionate about offering our trainees unique and exciting opportunities to enhance their lives in and out of medical training which in turn, not only supports career development, but ultimately enhances the quality of care we deliver to our communities.

Our region is full of philanthropic international health activity with many organisations sharing their expertise in less developed healthcare systems, often in poorer parts of the world. From Tanzania, Granada to Malaysia – the world really is your oyster.

Across the region there are hundreds of healthcare professionals and medical trainees involved volunteering their own time to work in partnership with healthcare organisations in some of the most challenging and complex environments in the world.

We have also developed a post CCT fellowship in humanitarian medicine where you can spend six months working in a GP training practice in the UK followed by six months deployment for humanitarian aid supervised by UKMED.

Many of our trainees have interests outside of their medical training which they would like to pursue - we always try and support these as much as possible and have programmes in place to help you return back to your training. Radiologist Amar Chotai was given time out of training to pursue his musical career. He’s been signed by a record label and his single ‘Senorita’ reached number one in the UK Latin pop chart!

Leadership and management fellowship

Trainees can take 12 months out of training to develop their leadership and management skills as part of our special fellowship programme. The leadership and management fellowship involves developing skills ‘on the job’ through running a project throughout the year, and through formal academic study. Fellows are sponsored to do a postgraduate certificate (PGCert) with several completing it in clinical leadership at Newcastle University. One fellow also recently continued to work towards a masters’ qualification in medical education.
