The Lead Employer Trust (LET) employs 19 training-grade, infection-focussed specialty doctors across the North East of England. These doctors may achieve a certificate of completion of training (CCT) in one of the following:

–        Single specialty-accreditation in Medical Microbiology (MM) (4 year programme)

–        Dual specialty-accreditation in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ID/MM) (5 year programme)

–        Dual specialty-accreditation in Medical Virology and Infectious Diseases (ID/MV) (5 year programme)

–        Dual specialty-accreditation in Infectious Diseases and General Internal Medicine (ID/GIM) (5 year programme)

Training can be broken down into combined infection training (CIT) and higher infection training (HIT):

–        Two years of combined infection training (CIT), consisting of infectious diseases (ID), microbiology (MM), virology (MV) and general internal medicine (GIM); followed by

–        Higher infection training (HIT): For trainees aiming for single specialty-accreditation in medical microbiology, this is 2 years long; For all other trainees, aiming for dual-specialty accreditation, it’s 3 years long.
