What’s on offer?

We are recognised as leaders in the delivery of formal and high-quality research training and we have dedicated integrated academic training pathway funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and run in conjunction with Newcastle University. Opportunities begin with the academic foundation programme, progressing through to academic clinical fellowships and into clinical lectureship posts.

For those trainees who decide that the research should be a larger part of their training we offer out-of-programme research opportunities, doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships. There are lots of opportunities to learn and undertake your own and collaborative research whilst in training. Research and evidence-based medicine are part of the day-to-day professional roles of doctors and dentists and are integrated in to our training.

Science in our heart

We are enriching and saving lives through science at the International Centre for Life – a science village in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne. The centre is at the forefront of research to identify the causes of genetic diseases and hosts the Institute of Genetic Medicine which works closely with the NHS Northern Genetics Service with its international reputation on many areas of life sciences.

At the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre we are leading hereditary breast and ovarian cancer research and stem cell harvesting.

Our region is home to the UK’s very first Campus for Ageing and Vitality making us the best place in the UK to grow old – the campus is a fantastic partnership between Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Newcastle University.

Not only that but are one of the largest recruiters to clinical trials. We are a region with strong collaborations which are delivering research to improve health and wellbeing and tackle inequalities. The Centre for Translational Research in Public Health brings to together our five North East Universities.
