National: Pre-Hospital Trainee Operated Research Network (PHOTON)

We are a group of non-consultant grade, pre-hospital, doctors who are passionate about improving the quality of pre-hospital research. In order to achieve this, we have collaborated to enable multicentre pre-hospital research to be conducted. Our ambition is to expand to include pre-hospital practitioners other than doctors once we have proof of concept and a successful output.

National: National Trauma Research and Innovation Collaborative (NaTRIC) 

NaTRIC is the UK National Trauma Research and Innovation Collaborative. Our aim is to deliver high quality audit and research projects at a national level which will improve care of the injured.

We are the first truly multidisciplinary research collaborative in the UK. Anyone with an interest in the care of injured can get involved – nurses, paramedics, doctors from a number of specialties, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and more attended our inaugural research meeting in June 2018.

2.  General Surgery

National: NOSTRA – Northern Surgical Trainee Research Association 

The Northern Surgical Trainees Research Association (NOSTRA) was relaunched in March 2015 by a group of surgical registrars, core trainees and foundation doctors. The goals of NOSTRA are to inspire, encourage and motivate surgical trainees to participate in high quality, well-designed multicentre clinical research. The collaborative template has been extremely successful in other regions across the UK and we hope to replicate similar success in the North East.

NOSTRA aims to empower trainees to conduct and lead clinical research projects and will support trainees with study design, protocol development, statistical analysis, ethical application, grant writing and study management. We invite trainees and medical students at all levels to attend the NOSTRA meetings and get involved.

EuroSurg is a European medical students and surgeons network who collaborate together to run high-quality, multi-centre, international studies

3.  Vascular Surgery

National: Vascular & Endovascular Research Network (VERN)


The Vascular and Endovascular Research Network (VERN) is a multidisciplinary collaborative for those involved or interested in the care of individuals with vascular conditions.

VERN welcomes vascular surgical trainees, interventional radiologists, vascular scientists, vascular nurses, students and researchers. VERN aims to help facilitate multi-centre cross-specialty research and audit.

4.  Plastic Surgery

National: Reconstructive Surgery Trials Network 


The RSTN is the UK clinical trials and collaborative research network for plastic surgery and hand surgery. It is for all levels of clinician, including medical students through to consultants. It aims to improve the evidence base for the treatments we provide patients.

National: British Urology Researchers in Surgical Training (BURST) 


The BURST Research Collaborative is a research group comprising primarily of Urological Registrars in the UK. The aim of the BURST Research Collaborative is to produce high impact multi-centre audit and research which can improve patient care.

INTEGRATE is the UK Trainee Research Collaborative Network. We are an entirely voluntary nonprofit unincorporated association, established in 2015 with the following aim: To support trainee engagement in ENT research and audit in the UK through meaningful participation in multicentre collaborative projects.

MTReC is a trainee led and delivered research network, which now has a presence in most Maxillofacial Surgery units across the UK. Our aim is to deliver high quality, clinically relevant, trainee led research.

National: CONNECT (Child Oral health NatioNal rEsearch CollaboraTive

CONNECT (Child Oral health NatioNal rEsearch CollaboraTive) is the only dental trainee-led collaborative research group in the UK.  Our aim is to conduct high quality, trainee-led, multi-centre research in the field of child oral health with the ultimate aim of improving care for our patients and their families. In addition, we aim to provide trainees with research experience, offering the opportunity to lead or support a research project, as well as research training in organised study days and events, such as academic breakfast and lunch & learn, at our annual national conference.

The British Neurosurgical Trainee Research Collaborative was founded in 2012 as an initiative of the British Neurosurgical Trainee Association (BNTA).

Our collaborative is supported by the Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS), the UK Neurosurgical Research Network (UKNSRN) and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

9.  Paediatric Surgery

National: Paediatric Surgical Trainees Research Network (PSTRN) 

Our team is made up of trainees at various stages of training, with consultant advisers from around the country.

We have trainees from sixteen paediatric surgical centres across the UK including Northern Ireland and Scotland.

We collaborate with other trainee groups in the UK, and have links to other societies including the Trainees in Paediatric Surgery (TRIPS), British Association of Paediatric Surgery (BAPS), and the Association in Surgeons in Training (ASiT).

New members are always welcome, please get in touch if you are interested joining our steering group, or in participating in any of our active projects.

11.  Anaesthetics

National: Research and Audit Federation of Trainees (RAFT)

As an umbrella organisation, RAFT acts as the exoskeleton for Trainee Research Networks in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care that are spread across the UK. This allows us to conceive and conduct pan-UK projects on a scale not previously possible. This in turn is helping anaesthetic trainees to be one of the major driving forces behind recent strides in collaborative perioperative research and audit.

Incarn.net is the research and QI collaborative for trainees in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine in the North East and North Cumbria.  We have undertaken a number of projects relating to anaesthesia, intensive care and perioperative medicine and are always open to new ideas from trainees at any stage and regardless of previous experience in research and QI!

NETRiON is an accessible research collaborative aiming to lower barriers to participation in ophthalmology research design and delivery. Projects are trainee led but draw on a broader community of undergraduates, foundation year doctors, consultants and university academics.

A trainee led initiative to create a regional network to improve trainee involvement in clinical trials and to undertake regional audits and studies.

National: Haematology Speciality Trainee Audit and Reseach (HaemSTAR) 

HaemSTAR is a UK wide network of haematology trainees working to promote non-malignant haematology research. We are supported by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) non-malignant haematology clinical research network (CRN). Our aims are:
• To increase the number of participants recruited into non-malignant haematology clinical trials nationally.
• To enable efficient transition of worthy local audits to the national scale in order to give their results more significance.
• To develop and roll out our own national studies which align with NIHR research priorities. This will create Chief Investigators of the future.
• To increase exposure for registrars to NHS Trust Research and Development departments and the NIHR in order to develop Principal Study Investigator skills which are currently not part of the haematology registrar training curriculum.

National: United Kingdom palliative trainees research collaborative (UKPRC) 

This is an opportunity to get involved in innovative research projects and national audits, and in doing so help to meet curriculum requirements for research and audit. You can contribute at any level, from collecting small amounts of data locally, to co-ordinating data collection within your region, to conceiving and directing national research projects. All contributions, however small, are important and will be acknowledged.

4.  Oncology

National: National Oncology Trainees Collaborative for Healthcare Research (NOTCH)

NOTCH (National Oncology Trainees Collaborative for Healthcare Research) which has essentially started from being a Northern Collaborative (Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool, Belfast) started in 2016, to more recently expanding to include over 30 centres across the UK. In the process of writing up our reports of two data collection sets (one on real-world immunotherapy toxicity data for over 2000 patients) which we hope to publish this year.

We are a UK-wide trainee-led research collaborative in geriatric medicine, with developing international links. We welcome involvement from trainees, medical students, nurses, and allied health professionals interested in research involving older adults.
