What makes us special?
The department employs over 100 staff and includes a range of specialties including:
- Clinical services
- Medicines information
- Dispensary services
- Procurement
- Distribution and logistics
We also run an insourced outpatient pharmacy and aseptic service, providing ward-based dispensing and counseling for patient discharge delivered by a closely collaborating team. Our aseptic services team dispenses approximately 12,000 parenteral items annually.
We are also currently rolling out a programme for installing Omnicell® automated stock management systems throughout the trust. Our department is affiliated to Durham University School of Medicine, Pharmacy and Health and regularly hosts students on placements, along with contributing to undergraduate Inter-Professional Learning for medics, nurses and pharmacists.
As a trust, we host the regional ‘quality control laboratory service’ and the ‘specialist regional procurement service’ and are a national pilot site for GS1/PEPPOL (Scan4Safety).
Our pre-reg trainees have weekly meetings with their pre-registration tutors and a programme of clinic and specialist care visits is provided throughout the pre-registration year. Students complete an annually updated comprehensive clinical workbook. Regular educational meetings are held jointly for pre-registration and junior pharmacists. Research interests are pursued through a managed framework in the department.
On-site accommodation is usually available on request.
