As a pre-registration pharmacist you will be predominantly based at one site but will benefit from the experience gained by working and training at both of the two main hospitals (Freeman and RVI) that make up The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
In addition to experiential learning you will have weekly clinical seminars and education and training meetings to support the GPhC assessment framework (calculations, exam support, OTC etc).
Each pre-registration pharmacist will have a GPhC tutor, clinical mentor to support your clinical development and a project supervisor.
We usually support eight trainees each year at the RVI and Freeman hospitals plus a community placement in the Newcastle/Tyne and Wear locality.
As one of the largest trusts in the UK, The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals Trust is an exciting place to work. In addition to supporting the secondary care needs for local patients, the trust offers a range of regional specialities. All trainees will gain clinical experience in the Great North Children’s Hospital, the Northern Centre for Cancer Care, specialist intensive care and an a fast paced admission unit that supports the largest A&E in the region in addition to broad clinical experiences such as surgery and medicine.
All trainee visit the trust’s MHRA licenced specials unit and spend time with the clinical trials team as the trust is one of the largest centres of clinical research in the UK.
A high proportion of our current pharmacist completed their pre-registration training in Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals. The pharmacy department within the Newcastle hospitals is dynamic, constantly changing and expanding so the possibility of future post registration posts is high although like all trusts can never be guaranteed.
