How many roles are available and where are they based?
We support ten trainees in the trust each year. In 26/27 we will have 7 full-time hospital trainees, 2 GP splits and 1 community split trainee. The base site for our trainees is the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. Other potential locations for rotations are: a GP practice, community pharmacy, the Friarage Hospital, Roseberry Park (Mental Health) Hospital and Healthcare at Home.
What makes us special?
Our goal for our trainee pharmacists is for them to enjoy their training year with us and to gain a rich in-depth experience in pharmacy practice. We aspire for them to complete their training and leave the training year as competent, confident pharmacist prescribers.
Our 52 week timetable is innovative, clinically orientated and provides insight into all aspects of pharmacy in the NHS. We have evidence-based extended rotations of up to 13 weeks, so trainees can fully immerse themselves into every aspect of pharmacy service provision. They can attend team meetings, MDTs, ward rounds, board rounds, huddles and more. They are encouraged to actively contribute towards these by presenting their own case based discussions and reflections.
Trainees have the opportunity to rotate through a wide variety of clinical specialities, for example:
- Cardiology – including Cardiothoracic surgery
- Respiratory Medicine
- Neurology – including neuro surgery.
- Renal medicine
- Cancer and Aseptic Services
- Paediatrics – including a neonatal unit and paediatric intensive care
- Care of the Elderly
- Trauma and Orthopaedics
- General Surgical Services (Gynaecology, Colorectal, Upper GI)
- Gastroenterology
- Acute medicine
We offer the greatest range of specialist services between Newcastle and Leeds, including being the major trauma centre for the South Durham, East Cleveland, Tees Valley and North Yorkshire areas. Throughout the programme, trainees will develop and strengthen pharmaceutical knowledge and skills, supporting them to become a confident and competent registered pharmacist. Experience in aseptic production and clinical trials are also included in the programme. We also continue to offer a two week cross sector element to the programme to give trainees valuable experience in the community pharmacy setting.
