Pharmacy training at

SOUTH TYNESIDE

NHS FOUNDATION TRUST

We offer a highly structured practical learning programme, working with your partner pre-registration pharmacist, and supported by your tutor. You will gain experience in all our acute settings and within our anticoagulant service, allowing you to develop your clinical decision making skills.

What we offer

Duties such as clinical and accuracy checking in the dispensary and in our aseptic unit, audit and self-assessment exercises will further develop your confidence and competence. Training is complemented by regular training days, cross sector placements, directed reading and study time.  Extensive support is provided by the tutor team to support students to meet competencies and pass the final exam.

What makes us special?

South Tyneside District Hospital is a single site 340-bedded acute and community integrated Trust providing acute services to the patients of South Tyneside and community services across South Tyneside, Sunderland and also into Gateshead. The pharmacy is a small, friendly department with 50 staff and provides pharmaceutical services to the hospital's specialities and medicine supplies to our community services.

Training locations

Pre-Registration Pharmacists rotate through the specialities including Emergency Admissions, Cardiology, Care of the Elderly, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Intensive Care, Orthopaedics, Oncology, Respiratory, Diabetes, Women’s Health and our anticoagulant service which provides out-patient clinics, along with the management of our in-patients.  We also provide short rotations at the Regional Drugs and Therapeutics Centre and a two week cross sector placement in Community Pharmacy for additional experience.

Job opportunities

Most of our Pre-Registration Pharmacists have either gone on to take up roles within our department or in nearby Trusts.
