Pharmacy training at

NORTHUMBRIA HEALTHCARE

NHS FOUNDATION TRUST

At Northumbria we strive to deliver innovative, first-class services for our patients. We recognise that the development of all of our staff is critical to this; as our staff develop, so will our services and the quality of care we provide to patients will be enhanced even further.  As such, we will do all that we can to provide the right environment in which to support your personal growth within our multi-disciplinary, integrated teams.

What we offer

In 2019-20 there will be two parallel pre-registration pharmacist programmes. Our original programme is well-established with an emphasis on advanced pharmacy practice and integrated care. Our new programme offers experience across primary and secondary care with extended placements in GP practices. Trainees in both programmes enter a clinically diverse programme to gain patient facing experience within our clinical and operational teams. The majority of the programme will be based at our Specialist Emergency Care Hospital; with rotations throughout our clinical teams covering:

  • acute care

  • cardiology

  • critical care

  • elderly medicine

  • paediatrics

  • respiratory

  • stroke

  • surgery (orthopaedic and general)

There will also be time spent across our other hospital sites and integrated care teams including: primary-care, aseptic services, oncology, community pharmacy and the Regional Drug and Therapeutics Centre. Our pre-registration training programme is also partnered with Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, with trainees spending four weeks at mental health hospitals; this collaboration allows us to give you a valuable insight into mental health pharmacy. Teaching and support will be provided throughout the year by our specialist pharmacists and the wider multi-disciplinary team.

Rotations are matched across the Trust so that, as far as possible, all trainees are covering the same speciality at the same time.  In house teaching topics are also timetabled to coincide with clinical rotations to maximise learning.

Exam success rates

In 2017, our trainees achieved a 100% pass rate in the registration exam

How many roles are available and where are they based?

For 2019-20 we have the exciting opportunity to work with Health Education England and the Northern School of Pharmacy and Medicines Optimisation to extend our pre-registration programme. This means that we will be supporting nine pre-registration places at Northumbria across two programmes. We will have five places on our original programme and four places on the new programme.

During your time at Northumbria you will have the opportunity to experience working in a wide variety of venues, including:

  • Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

  • North Tyneside General Hospital

  • Wansbeck General Hospital

  • Hexham General Hospital

  • GP surgeries

  • Care homes

  • Community Hospitals

  • Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (four week placement with mental health services)

  • The regional drug and therapeutics centre (one week placement)

  • Community pharmacy (three weeks cross-sector placement)

What makes us special?

At Northumbria we have a passion for extended role development and encourage all of our pharmacists to undertake further education and become independent prescribers. For the first time this year we also have pharmacists undertaking additional training to support our clinical service as advanced clinical practitioners. We see our pre-registration training year as essential stage in the development of skilled practitioners to work within our multi-disciplinary teams.

Our trust provides innovative, first class clinical pharmacy services across primary and secondary care.  At our specialist emergency care hospital, The Northumbria, we deliver leading edge ward based clinical pharmacy services seven days a week.  We use ward automation and electronic prescribing to augment the care we provide to patients.  As well as many other things, our team supports ward rounds and our pharmacists prescribe for most of the patients who are admitted into the trust.  Our pharmacy service is recognised for innovation and for the delivery of novel, value-adding care to patients.

Medicines optimisation through integrated care allows our pharmacy teams to care for our patients wherever they present i.e. in hospital, within a care home, GP practice or in their own home.  We have an established team of staff working clinically within multidisciplinary teams across primary and secondary care.

During your pre-registration year, you will get to see and experience all of this. Most importantly, you will be supported by the whole team to actively provide care to patients – streamlining your transition from trainee to clinical pharmacist.
