What we offer


During this placement, the pre-registration pharmacist will gain experience of clinical pharmacy practice in a mental health and disability setting and will be given opportunities to:


  • Develop their own clinical pharmacy skills.

  • Understand treatment options in a variety of mental health conditions.

  • To discuss treatment options with service users.


Our clinical service which the pre-registration pharmacist will experience includes:

  • Medicines reconciliation and review on admission and discharge.

  • Information and advice for patients and staff.

  • Medicine reviews for long stay patients taking a holistic view of the patient’s current        mental and physical healthcare needs

  • Physical health advice and discharge planning

 In 2016, our trainees achieved a 100% pass rate in the registration exam

How many roles are available and where are they based?


We run a joint programme with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust offering eight trainees each for a four week placement within Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear Foundation Trust integrated within the pre-registration year. Feedback from trainees about their experience within CNTW has consistently been highly positive.


What makes us special?

You will spend four weeks at Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW), where you will get an insight into mental health pharmacy. CNTW provides mental health and learning disability services to patients across the North East and Cumbria. It is one of the largest mental health and disability trusts in England serving a population of approximately 1.7 million. A recent CQC inspection rated the trust as outstanding, one of only two mental health trusts in the country to achieve this rating.

  • General adult psychiatry

  • Dementia services

  • Autism services

  • Forensic services

  • Learning disability services

  • Mother and baby (perinatal) services

  • Liaison psychiatry (working into Acute Trusts)

  • Affective disorders unit

  • Neurorehabilitation

  • Neuropsychiatry

  • Children and young people’s services

  • Addictions services


Our organisation is the second most research-active mental health trust in the country. It provides not only a comprehensive range of services to the local community, but also has a number of national specialist services with international recognition. We have a close relationship with our local universities in teaching, training and research and work collaboratively with local acute trusts on areas of common interest, including service development, research and training.

Additionally, trainees may have opportunities to experience working in community treatment teams and out-patients clinics within the trust.
