What we offer

 We offer a comprehensive rotational programme for pre-registration pharmacists which includes competency-based learning in the following areas:


Aseptic services:

  • Total parenteral nutrition

  • Cytotoxics


  • Non-sterile manufacturing

  • Quality control/quality assurance


Clinical pharmacy services:

  • Ward based clinical pharmacy

  • Acute and community anticoagulation services

  • Medicines governance

  • Independent pharmacist prescribing

  • Patient consultation

  • Discharge planning

  • Clinical trials

  • Dispensing (inpatient and outpatient)

  • In-house training sessions

  • Medicines information

  • Procurement and distribution

  • Project management, including audit

  • Regional training sessions

  • Regular support from tutor and other pharmacists



Rotations are matched across the Trust so that, as far as possible, all trainees are covering the same speciality at the same time.  In house teaching topics are also timetabled to coincide with clinical rotations to maximise learning. 




Exam success rates

100% pre-registration pharmacist assessment examination success over the last 10 years.

How many roles are available and where are they based?


We support two trainees each year and during their time with us, trainees may work from any of the following locations:

  • Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead

  • GP practices

  • Cross sector community pharmacy placement at a local Independent pharmacy

  • Regional drug and therapeutics centre

  • Community intermediate care services


What makes us special?

Gateshead provides individualised competency-based learning. We offer daily contact with personal tutors allowing our preregistration pharmacists to grow in knowledge and gain the understanding and skills required of a Registered Pharmacist. We are supported by fully integrated digital interoperable medicines systems:


  • JAC® EPMA (Electronic Prescribing & Medicines Administration) (all wards)

  • Omnicell® Automated Medicines Cabinets (all wards)

  • Ascribe/EMIS Pharmacy Stock Management

  • ARX Pharmacy Robot


Ward teams have individual laptops and Vocera® communication system to enable mobile Pharmaceutical care.

Job opportunities


A significant number of our pre-registration pharmacists have secured post-registration positions with us. We encourage and support our qualified pharmacists to undertake further professional qualifications including: 


  • Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy

  • Independent Prescribing

  • Advanced Clinical Skills.
