Eleanor grew up in the Midlands but moved to Stockton-On-Tees to study medicine at Queens Campus and later at Newcastle University. Her first job as a foundation doctor was in a small district general hospital in Northallerton working across the medical wards. Following that she moved to the larger site at James Cook in Middlesbrough where she has worked in general surgery, paediatrics and currently cardiology.
I have loved this place ever since I moved here for university. The people have been so friendly and welcoming from day one and you are surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside England has to offer. I have spent most of my time studying and working in James Cook hospital, I feel it offers all the excitement and variety of a tertiary specialist hospital whilst maintaining a very friendly district general hospital feel.
I have always felt very well supported in training in this area. People are extremely approachable and always happy to help offer advice and teaching.
For me the people are what make this place so special, however the gorgeous coastlines and being right on the doorstep of the north Yorkshire moors is an extra bonus too! There are endless new pubs and bars and enterprises opening up at the moment and it is exciting to watch the area grow and develop and get behind local businesses.
You will definitely not regret coming to the northern region for training. The hospital are excellent, the people are super friendly and the area is stunning! What more do you want from a place?.
Get stuck in, ask questions, ask to get involved in things.
Make sure you keep a work life balance, you will be more productive at work if you take care of yourself outside of work and there are plenty of places to go to wind down and chill out whatever it is you enjoying, from beautiful coastal walks to quirky coffee shops to pottery classes.
Enjoy it! Because it goes by so quickly.
