Ashley Scrimshire

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

I am currently taking some time out of programme for research, something which is very much encouraged in the orthopaedic programme here.

Having grown up in Leicester Ashley originally moved to Newcastle for his undergraduate training. Following this he moved to the North West to complete his foundation and core surgical training. Although this move was good in terms of widening his horizons, he was always keen to move back to the North East.

What made you choose to train in the North East?

Having been to uni here I already knew the city is fantastic, the people are extremely friendly and the hospitals are great, supportive places to train.

What have you gained from your training here?

I am currently taking some time out of programme for research, something which is very much encouraged in the orthopaedic programme here. This is a fantastic opportunity for me personally and professionally. I am certain I would not have found such a great opportunity elsewhere.

What are the best things about living in this part of the world?

Everything is really close by whether it be the coast, countryside, live sports, great nightlife and the people and fellow trainees are very welcoming.

What would you say to anyone considering training in the region?

Just do it, you won’t regret it.

What is your top tip for getting the most out of your training in the region?

Get a comfortable car, there can be a bit of driving and there’s loads of places to visit when not at work!

Describe the region in one word or phrase:

PURELY BELTA!
